Retro video game arcade in Wheeling closes

Donkey Kong has thrown his last barrel at Wheeling’s Headless Horseman Arcade.

The business has permanently shut down, effective Saturday, after less than two years at 1918 S. Wolf Road, according to its Facebook page.

“After a great deal of consideration, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close our doors,” the post read. It went on to thank supporters.

“Your encouragement, visits, and patronage have meant so much to us, and we are truly grateful to have been part of this community,” the post read.

When reached by phone Saturday, owner Udey “Dave” Kumra declined to comment.

Kumra opened Headless Horseman in December 2024. While stocked with cabinet games from the 1980s and ’90s, its business model was different from the arcades of that era.

Instead of taking quarters or tokens, all the games were set to free play. A $20 entry fee allowed customers to enjoy unlimited games for one day.

Headless Horseman hosted occasional wrestling matches and other events, too.

Customers and other supporters turned to Facebook to express sadness about the Horseman’s demise and wish Kumra well.

“Oh no! I am so sorry to see this,” one fan wrote. “We enjoyed visiting and introducing our boys to some classic games.”

Wrote another: “You did a great job. Your customer service was incredible and I always had fun playing the games!”

Headless Horseman’s games, spare cabinets, fixtures and equipment are available for purchase, according to the Facebook post.
