Lincolnshire author publishes eighth novel at 93
Proving that creativity has no retirement age, Barry Jay Freeman, a 93-year-old Lincolnshire resident and retired Chicago attorney, has published his eighth novel, “The Book of Leila, a/k/a Madame Scorpion.” After a distinguished 50-year legal career, Freeman has devoted his retirement to writing novels inspired by history, politics, and the complexities of the human experience.
“The Book of Leila” is a sweeping work of literary fiction that tells the epic life story of Leila Khani, a captivating femme fatale whose journey begins at birth in Istanbul and leads her into a career as a master spy operating throughout the Middle East, the United States and Europe.
Drawing on extensive historical research, the novel follows Leila through decades of political upheaval, personal sacrifice, survival and cultural conflict. It explores enduring themes of morality, courage, identity, family and resilience while bringing pivotal events of the 20th century vividly to life.
Freeman attended Thornton Township High School, the University of Michigan and Northwestern Law School. After passing the bar, he became an Illinois Assistant Attorney General and then an Assistant U.S. Attorney before going into private practice in Chicago. Before moving to Lincolnshire in 2008, he and his wife, Patsy, resided in Highland Park, where they raised four children. Since retiring from 50 years of legal practice, Freeman has made writing his full-time passion. His eight published novels reflect a lifelong fascination with history and the moral choices people face during extraordinary times. Completing “The Book of Leila” at age 93 stands as a testament to the enduring power of creativity, curiosity and perseverance.
