America in Bloom National Advisers participate in two-day tour of the village of Hawthorn Woods

The village of Hawthorn Woods recently hosted two of the America in Bloom National Advisers, Alex Pearl and Debbie Hamrick, to conduct a two-day tour of the entire community for consideration of a national award.

The tour showcased the village’s award-winning parks and preserves, municipal programs and infrastructure projects, as well as a review of environmental sustainability initiatives. The national advisers arrived from the states of Ohio and North Carolina and visited many residential gardens and properties while in the village. Special meetings with business leaders, governmental leaders and dozens of residents took place over the two-day visit.

The results of the evaluation tour will be announced at the annual America in Bloom Symposium to be held Sept. 24-26 in Washington, D.C. Last year, the village of Hawthorn Woods was recognized by America in Bloom as the Community Champion in their population category, receiving more points in this overall award than any other community in the program. In the past, the village has received recognition for their Community Vitality, Landscaped Areas, Urban Forestry and Environmental Efforts.

America in Bloom, a nonprofit organization founded in 2001, promotes community enhancement programs that emphasize cultural heritage, community vitality, environmental leadership, beautification efforts, floral landscapes, citizen engagement and urban forestry. The village of Hawthorn Woods has been an active participant in AIB since 2018. As a result, they have received over $100,000 in grant funding through the CN EcoConnexions From the Ground Up community greening grant program involving habitat restoration efforts in the village’s Brierwoods Preserve, Meadowlark Park and Arboretum, and Indian Creek Preserve.
