The ‘guiding light’ we should be posting
Some say the USA has lost our way. Fortunately, our founders gave us the Preamble. It is our guiding light and should be behind every law we pass with the goal of forming a more perfect union. In defiance of Amendment 1 of our Constitution, some in our country wish to replace the Preamble as our guiding light with the Ten Commandments and that they be displayed and taught in our schools. This appears to be unconstitutional. After all, there are two versions of the Ten Commandments. Instead of fighting over which to display, wouldn’t it be better to simply follow the Guiding Light of The Preamble? No need to fight. Wouldn’t that be nice and something that might unite us?
Our species, Homo Sapiens, has been around for 300,000 years. According to tradition, Moses appeared a little over 3,000 years ago, so for 297,000 years people operated without the Ten Commandments. From the beginning, our species quickly learned that their safety and survival depended on cooperative efforts by their families, tribes and nations to survive. In short, they helped each other. They established rules about respect, killing, thievery, etc. Had they not done so, they would not have survived and by extension, none of us would be here today.
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Prosperity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
What an amazing guiding light, worthy of display; in places of worship, schools, courtrooms, street corners, taverns, parks, homes. Yes, everywhere, especially congress and the white house!
