First phase of Barrington downtown streetscape nearly complete

Barrington is nearing the finish line for the first phase of its downtown streetscape improvements.

Village officials announced only the seating alcove on Cook Street and the northwest section of Park Avenue remain to be done.

Work on Park Avenue began Tuesday and is expected to take about one week to complete. Park Avenue will temporarily close as the work zone extends into the drive aisle, village officials said.

Businesses remain open, officials said, with the village taking to social media to express its gratitude for the cooperation from businesses, patrons and visitors during construction.

Village President Mike Moran during his report at Monday’s village board meeting, said the village hopes to wrap up the first phase in a week or two. He is happy with what he has seen so far.

“It’s looked really good,” he said. “We have gotten a lot of positive feedback.”

Deputy Village Manager Marie Hansen said nearly all the work on Cook and Station streets is complete. The work on Park will include an outdoor dining patio.

The project has also included the removal of pavers, installation of new sidewalks and clay brick accents, relocation of the trash enclosure on Station Street and enhanced landscaping throughout.

Hansen said some safety concerns about older, deteriorating pavers were addressed. She said some trees in poor condition or with unsafe root systems were removed.

Phase two, which includes enhancements on Hough and Main streets, is targeted for next year.

Hansen said all phases of the project is likely to cost $3.5 million combined.
