‘An inspiration’: Activist, teacher and rock mom Mary Morello has died at 102

Mary Morello, an international activist and retired Libertyville High School teacher who became known to generations of music fans as guitar virtuoso Tom Morello’s mom and biggest booster, has died at 102, her son announced.

“Mary Morello is forever with the Rebels of Light & Song,” Tom Morello — guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave and other bands — posted Sunday on Instagram.

Born and raised in Marseilles, Illinois, Mary Morello lived and taught around the globe. In the early 1960s, she married Kenyan diplomat Ng'ethe Njoroge; they had a son, Tom, before divorcing. Morello and Tom moved to Libertyville when he was a toddler, and in 1965 she became a social studies teacher at Libertyville High School.

“Her commitment to teaching and serving students remains part of District 128’s rich history,” Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 Superintendent Marc Schaffer said through a spokesperson. “We are grateful for her contributions to our school community and extend our heartfelt condolences to her son, Tom (LHS '82), her family, and all who knew her.”

The elder Morello retired from teaching in 1987 and founded an anti-censorship group called Parents for Rock and Rap in response to rising censorship efforts in the U.S.

When Tom Morello found success and fame with Rage Against the Machine in the 1990s, Mary Morello was there, often introducing the group and those that followed to enthusiastic concert audiences from center stage as “the best (expletive) band in the universe.”

The duo were featured in a 2021 documentary series about rock musicians and their mothers called “From Cradle to Stage.”

Last year, Tom Morello described his mother in an Australian interview as “an inspiration for everything that I do.”

In an October 2025 social media post commemorating her birthday, Morello called his mother “a lifelong champion of the oppressed, an uncompromisingly righteous truth teller and a loving mom & grandma.”

Morello announced in late June that his mother had been hospitalized. He reportedly pulled out of scheduled concert appearances to care for her.

Tom Morello’s Instagram post about his mother’s passing drew thousands of replies from fans as well as celebrities including actor/musician Jack Black, rapper Flavor Flav and actress Cheri Oteri. Members of bands including Anthrax, Garbage and Living Colour expressed their condolences, too.

“So sorry for your loss,” Motley Crue cofounder and bassist Nikki Sixx wrote. “What a warrior.”

Musician Nandi Bushell called Mary Morello “an inspirational role model for us all.”
