Michigan man dies from injuries suffered in July Fourth crash in Geneva

A Michigan man who was critically injured in a July Fourth crash in Geneva that killed his mother died from his injuries Sunday, authorities said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office reported 27-year-old Zachary Rohbock died Sunday just after 2 a.m. at Stroger Hospital in Chicago, where he had been hospitalized since the day of the crash.

Geneva police said Rohbock’s 71-year-old mother, Mary Wilbur, was driving a 2019 Nissan Versa south on the 100 block of Randall Road just after 9 p.m. July 4 when a northbound Chevrolet Camaro crossed the double yellow lines and collided with her. Rohbock was a passenger in his mother’s vehicle.

Wilbur, a Geneva resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Camaro was identified as Christian Mares, 40, of Aurora. He is charged with reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, two counts of aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm and two counts of aggravated DUI for driving without insurance, according to Geneva police.

Mares is being held in jail in Kane County awaiting trial.

According to Rohbock’s obituary, he and his mother had just returned from a trip to Machu Picchu in Peru.

Funeral arrangements include a visitation Thursday, July 23, from 4-8 p.m. at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Road in Elmhurst. A funeral Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 134 Arthur Street in Elmhurst. Interment will be held at a later date in Wisconsin.
