No injuries reported after kitchen fire at Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights
A sprinkler head extinguished a kitchen fire Monday night inside Mitsuwa Marketplace in Arlington Heights, authorities said.
The fire started just after 7 p.m. when a cook at Teriyaki Chopper, one of the restaurants inside the Japanese supermarket at 100 E. Algonquin Road, moved a rice cooker to clean behind it, officials said.
A gas line attached to the cooker broke, and the gas was ignited by an open flame on the cooktop grill, the Arlington Heights Fire Department’s investigation revealed.
The sprinkler head put out the fire, while the activated fume hood shut off the gas supply to appliances, officials said.
The fire was out at 7:07 p.m., just five minutes after fire department crews were dispatched by an automatic fire alarm.
Employees and patrons evacuated the restaurant safely, and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters confirmed that flames didn’t extend to the rest of the building, and they worked to ventilate the building and shut down the sprinkler system to minimize water damage.
