Libertyville man charged with hate crime detained pending future court date

A Libertyville man facing charges of a hate crime and disorderly conduct was ordered detained in the Lake County jail Wednesday pending a future court date.

Derek Webb, 38, is charged with one count of a hate crime, a felony, and one count of disorderly conduct in connection with a report April 5 at a Gurnee business in which a sign appearing to be a bullseye with the words “Good Shot Ice” written on it was posted.

The charges allege Webb made direct threats against Latinos and immigrants in the community, according to a news release from the Lake County state's attorney's office.

Prosecutors petitioned to detain Webb, arguing he deliberately posted signs threatening to businesses without permission, making employees concerned for their safety, according to the release.

Some of the businesses employ Hispanic or international staff who felt “disturbed and alarmed” by the signs, according to the release.

Webb's next court hearing is scheduled for July 21. An investigation throughout multiple jurisdictions continues.
