Man gets 20 years for attempted murder in Naperville

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for trying to kill a woman with whom he was romantically involved.

Willie Tidwell, 53, of the 300 block of West North Avenue, was sentenced Monday morning by DuPage County Judge Margaret O’Connell. Tidwell pleaded guilty in December to attempted murder.

On Sept. 10, 2022, Tidwell went to the Extended Stay hotel in Naperville, where the victim was staying. They began arguing after Tidwell accused her of ignoring his calls and blocking his phone number, authorities said.

According to prosecutors, Tidwell hit the victim repeatedly and stabbed her 11 times in the stomach, neck and chest. He then fled.

Tidwell was arrested nearly three weeks later. He was held without bail in the DuPage jail while awaiting trial and sentencing.
