Elgin police, firefighters searching for man in Fox River

Elgin police and firefighters are searching the Fox River for a man who authorities say jumped into the river.

According to the Elgin Police Department, officers responded at 10:52 a.m. to the area of Highland Avenue and State Street for the report of a male subject interfering with railroad operations.

After police officers made contact with the man, he fled on foot and ran into the Fox River, authorities said. According to police, the officers say they observed that the man had a “large knife.”

Boats and divers from the Elgin Fire Department responded to the area and deployed water rescue equipment to try to get the man safely back to land.

While those efforts were underway, the man went under the surface of the water, officials said.
