Teen charged with stealing from Oak Brook store, fleeing police at high speed

A 17-year-old boy is being detained pretrial, accused of stealing more than $1,000 of items from an Oakbrook Center store, then fleeing police at high speeds.

The teen, who is from Chicago, has been charged with burglary, retail theft and aggravated fleeing and eluding, all felonies, according to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

Authorities said the teen entered the Alo store around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. He selected clothing items, went into a fitting room, put them on under his clothes, and left without paying, officials said.

According to the release, the boy drove away in a red Jeep Wrangler, which contained passengers. An Oak Brook police officer followed him to Spring Road, where the Jeep was traveling faster than 70 mph in a 25 mph zone. The Jeep crossed into oncoming traffic while trying to enter Frontage Road and rolled over.

Nobody was injured.

The boy’s next court appearance is June 25.

The news release did not name the boy because DuPage County juvenile court judges typically prohibit publication of the names of defendants charged as juveniles.
