Gas tax giftg is a joke
Gov. Pritzker and Illinois lawmakers just froze a 1.3 cent per-gallon tax increase scheduled for July 1 until Jan. 1, 2027. Big deal! That is a drop in the bucket compared to the current gas tax of 48.3 cents a gallon. Illinois is one of only 5 states that charge a general sales tax on gasoline. To help their constituents, Indiana has already suspended their gas tax. Gov. Pritzker says the gas tax money is needed for road repair and current repair projects would come to a halt without the gas tax money. Yet, because of rising prices for gas causing a tax windfall, lawmakers were able to recently move $150 million from gas sales tax fund to the general fund. And this money move will not affect road repair projects?
Gov. Pritzker, think about your constituents and help us deal with these rising gas prices that affect delivery of food and numerous items we are using daily, causing rapidly rising inflation.
Suspend the Illinois gas tax to give some relief to citizens of Illinois and you will be rewarded by voters at election time.
