Libertyville emergency crews conduct search on river after empty kayak discovered

The discovery of an overturned, empty kayak along the Des Plaines River in Libertyville Sunday morning set off a search by emergency workers from 20 agencies.

Libertyville Fire Department officials said another kayaker spotted a partially submerged kayak stuck in branches just before 11 a.m. near Oak Spring Road Bridge.

Fire officials said there were no signs of anyone near the kayak.

A “swift water rescue response” was issued and multiple agencies from the area responded to search for someone who might have been in the kayak. No one was found during a three-hour search, fire officials said.
