Crowds Gather for Three-Day Greek Festival at St. Sophia Church in Elgin

Humid, rainy weather did not keep the crowds away from the 46th annual St. Sophia Greek Fest Friday in Elgin.

With a full lineup of performers and entertainment this weekend -- including the John Panopoulos Orchestra, the St. Sophia Agape Dance Troupe and much more -- festivalgoers have plenty to enjoy.

Authentic Greek entrees and sweets, Greek beer, Mediterranean wine and more were available to purchase and enjoy.

Chris Theodorou, now of Boise, Idaho, has been volunteering for last 28 years and was hard at work Friday in the food tent carving Gyros, preparing them for guests.

Theodorou said that he grew up here in the area and now makes a point to come back to help each year.

The festival continues noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 6, and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 525 Church Road, Elgin.

Admission is free and open to the public.
