Waukegan Park District hosts 35th annual Fishing Derby

The Waukegan Park District is hosting the 35th Annual Fishing Derby from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, at Bevier Park, 2255 W. York House Road.

Participants will have the chance to win prizes in a friendly competition for the smallest and largest fish caught overall. Competitions will be held for the following age groups: 4 years or younger, 5-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-16 years, and 17 years or older. Prizes will be awarded to the individuals who catch the three largest fish in each age group.

The Waukegan Park District hosted the first Fishing Derby in 1990 at Roosevelt Park, 520 S. McAlister Ave. The annual event has been held at Bevier Park since 1995. This year, the Bevier Pond will be stocked with more than 500 fish for the event.

On-site check-in will begin at 7 a.m. Preregistration is required as there is no on-site registration, and only one pole or rod per participant is allowed. The cost to compete is $3 per participant 12 or younger, $5 per participant 13 or older for residents, and $5 per participant 12 or younger, $7 per participant 13 or older for nonresidents.

Participants can register online or at the Field House Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Center, at 800 N. Baldwin Ave., in Hinkston Park. Worms will be sold on-site. For more information, including registration, visit waukeganparks.org/fishingderby.
