Boys lacrosse: Glenbard West waits, then dominates to earn another trip to state

Patience.

Glenbard West had plenty of it Tuesday in the boys lacrosse supersectional in Hoffman Estates.

The Hilltoppers took their time on the offensive end and that helped them deliver a 10-4 victory over New Trier to advance back to the state finals.

“So, they run a zone,” said Glenbard West coach Eric Nuss, whose team was second in the state in 2024.

“When you run a zone, you kind of give up the ability to try to take the ball away. You are hoping for saves and obviously, they had a few. But we focused on patience, looking for good shots and not having shots saved.”

Glenbard West will play St. Viator, who beat Lake Forest on Tuesday, in the state semifinal at Hinsdale Central at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“It is going to be a tough game,” Nuss said. “But we’ll have a good practice tomorrow and we will be ready.”

Glenbard West will return to the state finals after losing in the supersectional game to New Trier last year. It will be the fourth appearance at the state finals for the Hilltoppers (20-4).

The Hilltoppers looked like they might be chasing New Trier (14-8).

After Glenbard West’s Will Hoisington scored the game’s first goal, the Trevians answered with two goals of their own to lead midway through the first period.

That’s when Chase Lloyd stepped in for the Hilltoppers. The sophomore intercepted a pass right in front of the New Trier cage and then quickly fired it past New Trier goalie //Graham Hazday to tie the game 2-2.

“It was crazy,” said Lloyd, who would score again just over a minute later to put the Hilltoppers up 3-2.

“I was coming up for the ride, and the ball happened to be there. It was definitely the right moment of time there.”

New Trier was able to tie the game at 3-3 with just 12.3 seconds left in the first quarter. But it was all Glenbard West from there as the Hilltoppers scored the next seven goals to lead 10-3 midway through the final quarter.

Jack Davis scored the first of his two goals and Hoisington also tallied to put Glenbard West up 5-3 at the half.

“Possession is the key,” said Hoisington, who is a junior. “I think controlling the ball Is the biggest part of the game.”

Adding to that control was faceoff specialist Scott Segabarth. The senior continually won faceoffs for Glenbard West, giving the Hilltoppers long possession streaks.

“I needed to do that today,” Segabarth said. “Their top faceoff guy was out, so it was really important to win these today.”

With the Hilltoppers stacking possessions and New Trier uncharacteristically turning the ball over, Glenbard West put the game away.

Glenbard West tallied twice in the third quarter with Joey Beiermeister and Davis scoring his second goal to make it 7-3. The Hilltoppers then tallied three more times with Jacob Quintos, Ivan Blood and Beiermeister scoring.

New Trier, which went scoreless for 31-1/12 minutes, finally broke back through with just under 2:30 to play.
