Boys lacrosse: Wheaton Academy handles Barrington, advances to state

Prolific offense, stifling defense and solid goalkeeping.

All those ingredients contributed to Wheaton Academy’s 17-3 win over Barrington in Tuesday’s Huntley supersectional.

The Warriors (13-8) move to the state finals at Hinsdale Central to play St. Ignatius Thursday at 5 p.m., St. Ignatius defeated Linccoln-Way West co-op 15-3 on Tuesday.

This is the fifth trip to the state finals for the Warriors in six years.

Jett Yaros paced the state-bound Warriors with six goals.

“We had time to prep for their 3-3 zone,” said Yaros. “We were really pumped for this game. We had a couple of great practices. This is unbelievable. We are ready to do some great things at the state tournament.”

Warriors coach Cort Miller was amazed at Yaros’s effort.

“Jett has been struggling some lately,” said Miller. “He was amazing tonight. His shot was incredible.”

Lincoln Hoger added 4 goals and Tommy Sommer three and Mike Lavelle two for the winners.

“We were really on the attack from the beginning,” said Miller. “We were really pumped and ready to play. Our offense was clicking.”

Cason Ross made six saves in the goal in the first half for the Warriors, who led 10-1 at halftime.

“Playing goalie is all mental,” said Ross. We are super healthy now and our offense is slinging. Our scout team did a great job of getting me ready for this game.”

Barrington (12-9) played the last three quarters without goalie Dylan Mazgag, who suffered a hamstring injury.

“That really hurt,” said Barrington coach Brian Niven. “We had our ups and downs this year but ended with a good season. Wheaton Academy is a very good team.”
