New executive director takes helm of DuPage forest preserve system

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has a new executive director.

The board on Tuesday unanimously voted to promote a public-facing leader from within the district’s organization. Anamari Golf Dorgan has the necessary qualifications, experience and skills for the top administrative post, Forest Preserve President Daniel Hebreard said.

“As the district's director of community engagement since 2017, Anamari has demonstrated steady leadership, strong communication and a clear commitment to serving the residents of DuPage County,” Hebreard said.

Dorgan has overseen the district’s seven education centers, resident and media communications and visitor experience programs.

“I am honored by the board’s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to continue working on behalf of our residents, board, and staff in an even broader capacity,” Dorgan said in a statement. “For more than a century, the Forest Preserve District has protected forests, prairies, wetlands, and other vital natural spaces within one of the region’s most developed counties while connecting people to nature through conservation, education, and outdoor recreation.

“I look forward to building on that strong foundation while helping advance the Forest Preserve District’s mission and long-term priorities for future generations,” she added.

More recently, Dorgan invited people to take part in the district’s new “Unplug to Recharge” campaign. The challenge is to spend 30 minutes a day screen-free and outside exploring nature this summer.

In other words, “Join This Live Stream” or “Connect to These Clouds,” as demonstrated in a clever district video.

Dorgan previously held leadership roles at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle. Her earlier career included exhibition development and project leadership at Chicago’s Field Museum.

The district on its website posted her proposed compensation package. It shows she is set to receive a salary of $220,522.

Former Executive Director Karie Friling left the district in mid-May to become the city manager of Sarasota, Florida. The search for her successor proved it’s a highly sought-after job.

In total, more than 130 applicants were reviewed.

“The response to our recruitment was impressive, which I believe reflects the reputation of our organization and the staff that a new executive director will lead,” Hebreard said.

Dorgan earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in anthropology from the University of Illinois, a certificate in nonprofit management from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, as well as the Certified Park and Recreation Executive credential from the National Recreation and Park Association.
