Baseball roundup: Stevenson, Barrington, Carmel score victories in regional semifinals

Stevenson’s Ryan Martin walked off the Patriots into the 4A regional final at the Hoffman Estates Thursday.

Martin drilled a bases-loaded double with no outs to drive in Frank Costabile and a sliding Sam Adelman as Stevenson outlasted Rolling Meadows 5-4.

The victory moved the eighth-seeded Patriots (20-16) into the regional final Saturday at noon against top-seeded and North Suburban Conference rival Libertyville (25-10). Stevenson split its two games this season against the defending 4A state champion Wildcats.

Rolling Meadows (19-14) scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Tony Romanacce had 3 hits and 2 RBI for the Mustangs while Quinn Hextall had a double.

Barrington 4, St. Charles East 2: Will Renshaw started slow but finished strong for fifth-seeded Barrington (24-12). Renshaw surrendered two runs in the bottom of the first and then shut down the fourth-seeded Saints (21-14) the rest of the way. He stuck out 7 and allowed just 4 hits on his way to pitching a complete game.

Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, the Broncos got RBI singles from Bowie Heintz, Ryan Costello and Zack Ostergaard to take the lead for good. Drew Whitney had an RBI sacrifice fly for the Broncos in the first.

Barrington will host and top-seed McHenry at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Highland Park 6, Conant 0: Highland Park’s Simon Rose one-hit Conant (16-16). The Cougars’ Alex Martinez broke up the no-hitter with a two-out, two-strike double in the top of the seventh. Rose fanned 10 as the fifth-seeded Giants (26-8) advanced to the regional finals. They will meet host Buffalo Grove and the 14th-seeded Bison (16-19) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Class 3A

Carmel 19, Vernon Hills 4 (5 innings): Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fourth, 10th-seed Carmel (15-21) exploded. The Corsairs struck for 11 runs in the frame. They then followed with 7 more runs in the fifth for the decisive win. Carmel will now meet top-seed Crystal Lake South at 10 a.m. Saturday at Vernon Hills.

JJ Doyle had 3 hits and 4 RBI for the Corsairs. Josh Ouimette had 2 hits, including a double and 3 RBI, and Michale Haran and Preston Haran each had 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Deerfield 11, Lakes 3: Deerfield struck for seven runs in the first two innings and the 12th-seeded Warriors (14-22) would coast from there. Lakes (22-10), which won the Northern Lake County Conference title, did strike for three runs in the sixth thanks to a Hunter Bergdahl RBI triple. He would then score on a wild pitch while Ean Ankney had an RBI walk, but the Eagles would leave the bases loaded.

Crystal Lake Central 6, Wauconda 3: Crystal Lake Central pulled away from a 2-2 tie to end the season for Wauconda (20-13). Dominic Ciaburri had an RBI double for Wauconda while Brody Randolph had an RBI single.

Other regional finals involving area teams will also be contested Saturday.

Class 4A: Maine South, which is the second seed in the Bartlett sectional, hosting No. 7 Glenbard West at 11 a.m. Mundelein, the No. 4 seed in the Libertyville sectional, hosts fifth seed Prospect at 11 a.m. Warren, the second seed at Libertyville, will be taking on North Suburban Conference rival Lake Zurich, which is the 10th seed at Palatine at 10 a.m.

Class 3A: Grayslake Central is the third seed in the sectional they host. The Rams will play sixth seed Prairie Ridge at Cary-Grove at 10 a.m.
