Baseball: Bartlett, Downers Grove North, Lake Park take regional semifinals triumphs
Vince Yario pitched four innings of 1-hit ball with two walks and a pair of strikeouts, while helping his own cause with a home run and 3 RBI during Bartlett’s 10-5, 5-inning Class 4A regional semifinal baseball triumph over Leyden Wednesday in Bartlett.
The Upstate Eight West champions improved to 24-10 for the season with a 10-hit attack, paced by senior leadoff man Josh Colaizzi, who went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, and a stolen base. Brandon Pelz, Mason Leiterman and James Fresso supported the cause.
Joe Kennedy work a scoreless inning of relief for the third-seeded Hawks, who advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against either Notre Dame or Batavia.
Downers Grove North 1, Oswego 0: Junior hard-throwing right-hander Colin Doyle pitched a 2-hitter as fourth-seeded Downers Grove North (22-12) edged 13th seed Oswego (16-20) 1-0 in Wednesday’s Class 4A Oswego East regional semifinals.
Doyle, a 6-foot-6, Duke University commit who entered the game with a 0.82 ERA, walked 3 and struck out 7 for the Trojans, who advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against Yorkville or Oswego East.
The Trojans scored the only run of the contest in the first inning. Senior Drake Cosenza walked, stole second and came across on junior Oliver Gibson’s RBI single. Senior Jack Romsey had the Trojans’ other basehit.
Lake Park 4, Glenbard North 0: Sophomore right-hander Colton Hardman pitched 5⅔ scoreless innings and drove in the eventual game-winning RBI on a hit batsman during Lake Park’s 4-0 Class 4A regional semifinal victory over 13th-seeded Glenbard North (11-18-2) Wednesday in Roselle.
Josh Kolton led the offense, going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI, while Antonio Leto added a single, run scored and RBI.
Patrick St. John recorded the final four outs to earn the save for the Lancers (16-20), who avenged a 2-1 series defeat to the Panthers in DuKane Conference play.
With the win, fourth-seeded Lake Park advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against either Glenbard East or Wheaton North.
Hinsdale Central 12, Plainfield East 2: West Suburban Conference Silver Player of the Year Dylan Kassab highlighted a 10-run third inning with a grand slam over the center-field fence to lift third-seeded Hinsdale Central (25-11) to a 12-2 Class 4A Benet Academy regional semifinal victory over Plainfield East on Wednesday in Lisle.
With the win, the WSC Silver co-champion Red Devils advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against either Benet or Downers Grove South.
South Elgin 10, Larkin 0: Junior Jonathan Niksich and senior Caden Weniger combined for a no-hitter during South Elgin’s 10-0, 5-inning Class 4A regional semifinal victory over seventh-seeded Larkin (10-18) Wednesday at St. Charles North.
Niksich fanned 11 in 4⅔ innings before Weniger recorded the final out.
Alex Muro paced the offense, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, while Kyle Iott went 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBI. Evan Gomez, David Kiel, Jacob Robertson and Zach Barkho supported the cause.
Second-seeded South Elgin advances to Saturday’s 10 a.m. regional championship against No. 3 seed St. Charles North.
Wheaton Academy 16, Marmion 1: Junior Braden Christensen went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI, while teammates Jackson From, Dom Murrell, and Angelo Murrell each drove in a pair of runs during Wheaton Academy’s 16-1, 4-inning Class 3A regional semifinal triumph over No. 7 Marmion Wednesday at St. Francis.
Senior starting pitcher Lincoln Park worked 3⅓ innings of 1-run, 3-hit ball for the second-seeded Warriors (28-7), who advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against either St. Francis or Sycamore.
Charlie Zebig drove in the lone run for the Cadets (12-20).
Montini 21, Chicago Clark 0: Kameron Cox and Julio Ayala each hit home runs, while Sonny Mateja raised his record to 5-0 with 3 innings of no-hit pitching and 9 strikeouts during the Broncos’ 21-0 Class 3A regional semifinal rout of Chicago Clark in Lombard.
The third-seeded Broncos (23-13) advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against either Hinsdale South or Kelly.
Harvest-Westminster 7, Rockford Lutheran 4: Brian Powers, Brennan O’Donnell, and Carter Goetz all drove in a pair of runs, as third-seeded Harvest-Westminster Christian (23-7) opened Class 2A regional semifinal action with a 7-4 victory over 10th-seeded Rockford Lutheran Wednesday in Marengo.
Harvest-Westminster advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against either Marengo or Rockford Christian.
Willowbrook 11, Maine West 1: The top-seeded Warriors improved to 29-6 with Wednesday’s 11-1 Class 4A regional semifinal triumph over 17th-seeded Maine West in Villa Park.
Alex Dew (2 for 3) drove in 3 runs, while Jake Bonino (2 for 2, 2 walks) and Alex Rodriguez (1 for 3) each knocked in a pair for the Warriors, while Bobby Biggs worked 6 innings of 3-hit ball with 8 strikeouts.
Willowbrook advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against Thursday’s Wheaton Warrenville South-York winner.
Crystal Lake South 10, Woodstock 0: The top-seeded Gators (25-9) advanced to Saturday’s Class 3A Vernon Hills regional championship with Wednesday’s 10-0, 5-inning regional semifinal victory over Woodstock.
Matt Bychowsky pitched 5 innings of 6-hit ball with 3 strikeouts, while Carson Trivellini and Nolan Dabrowski paced the offense. CL South will face either Vernon Hills or Carmel in Saturday’s 10 a.m. regional championship.
Huntley 10, Rockford Jefferson 0: The top-seeded Red Raiders improved to 29-7 with a 10-0, 6-inning victory over No. 8 seed Rockford Jefferson in Wednesday’s Class 4A DeKalb regional semifinals.
Huntley, which advances to Saturday’s 10 a.m. regional championship against either DeKalb or Harlem, built a 6-0 lead after 2 innings before putting the game on ice with a 3-run sixth.
Timothy Christian 6, Hancock 3: Trailing 3-1 after 4 innings, the 7th-seeded Trojans (9-17) grabbed the lead with a 3-run fifth and added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth during Wednesday’s Nazareth Class 3A regional semifinal victory over Hancock.
Timothy Christian advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional championship against No. 2 seed Nazareth.
Geneva 19, Streamwood 0: The top-seeded Vikings improved to 29-7 with Wednesday’s 19-0 Class 3A regional semifinal victory over Streamwood at Burlington Central.
The DuKane Conference champions advance to Saturday’s regional championship against either Kaneland or Burlington Central.
