Students showcase Hindu culture while honoring educators in the western suburbs

On May 3, more than 70 teachers were felicitated by the students from the western suburb of Lincoln Junior High School. In the annual Guruvandana (teacher’s appreciation) event, students from Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh invited their teachers to showcase their culture, felicitate, and revere the teachers.

Teachers from 15 different schools have attended the event, including Indian Prairie Unit District 204 board president Laurie Donahue, board member Natasha Grover, Oswego Community Unit District 308 Superintendent Andalib Khelghati, and Naperville City Council member Supna Jain.

More than 250 members attended the event.

Both middle school and high school students presented a poster exhibition representing Hindu culture and architecture. Teachers thoroughly enjoyed their students’ presentation and asked inquisitive questions about Hindu culture.

Students from elementary schools presented a coordinated dumbbell art form to amuse the audience.

The entire program was organized and presented by the high schoolers. Students explained the meaning of the word “Gu-Ru” as “Remover of Darkness” and explained the value teachers are held in their Hindu culture. Each teacher was called up and presented with gifts from their students.

All the school board administrators appreciated the teachers’ tireless efforts in educating the children and thanked them for their service.

Delicious Indian food was served to all the teachers and attendees of the event.
