Comments misattributed

In your Sunday edition, you shared an updated version of an editorial board opinion on graduation that you originally published in June 2014. In it, you cited words “attributed to Mother Teresa” that start with “People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.”

This collection is known as the “Paradoxical Commandments” and was originated by Kent M. Keith when he was a college student in 1968. Apparently at some point a version of it was posted in one of Mother Teresa's missions, but she did not write it. It has been misattributed to numerous other people over the years.

I think it's remarkable that a college student came up with these more than fifty years ago, and I think he deserves the credit.

You can find the original comments and more of his writings at kentmkeith.com.
