$175M cancer, neuroscience care facility proposed at Arlington Heights hospital

A $175 million expansion for cancer and neuroscience care has been proposed for Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

The facility is planned for land between the existing hospital at 800 W. Central Road and Kirchoff Road, which is on the north side of the medical campus, according to documents filed with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board by the hospital’s parent company, Endeavor Health.

The three-story, 104,064-square-foot center primarily would offer outpatient services but also would serve patients admitted to the main hospital, documents indicate. It would be connected to the main hospital building by an enclosed bridge.

Various cancer-related services would be offered, including infusion, radiation, surgical and gynecologic, documents indicate. Doctors and staff specializing in neurological conditions such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and spine disorders would work here as well.

The facility would have room for clinics, research and trial programs, too.

The new center will let Northwest Community better coordinate patient care and improve access to advanced experts and treatments, Endeavor spokesperson Spencer Walrath said.

According to the plans submitted to the state, the first floor would house radiology, oncology and neuroscience departments. The second floor would be dedicated to oncology. It’s also proposed to house services now available at Swedish Hospital’s cancer institute, which is part of the Endeavor chain.

The third floor would have room for future expansion. Physician office space and radiology services also are expected.

A December 2029 completion is envisioned, documents indicate. The plans require approval from the state and the village board; municipal discussions haven’t yet been scheduled, Walrath said.

The proposed expansion “demonstrates Endeavor Health’s deep commitment to Arlington Heights and the surrounding communities,” hospital President David Rahija said through Walrath.

“We’re bringing world-class cancer, neuroscience and other specialized care services closer to home, ensuring our neighbors have access to advanced treatments right here in Arlington Heights,” Rahija said.

Founded in 1959, Northwest Community Hospital serves more than 650,000 outpatients and nearly 22,000 inpatients annually, according to the state filing. It became part of the Endeavor chain through the 2022 merger of Edward-Elmhurst Health and NorthShore University HealthSystem.

In addition to Northwest Community Hospital, Endeavor includes Elmhurst Hospital, Edward Hospital in Naperville, Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Highland Park Hospital, Linden Oaks Hospital in Naperville, Skokie Hospital and Swedish Hospital in Chicago.

Last year, Endeavor proposed a $100 million, two-story expansion at Elmhurst Hospital for its cancer center and surgical services, among other uses.
