Rosemont summer concerts kick off with tighter security

Rosemont’s 20-show summer concert series will kick off Sunday with tighter security than years’ past, officials say, because of the growing crowds that come to the village’s entertainment district.

Rockin’ in the Park — the free shows that take place at least weekly on the lawn of Parkway Bank Park — attracts 3,000 to 5,000 people per concert. Organizers expect it to be just as crowded this year, especially with a planned three-day Rockin’ in the USA music festival over Fourth of July weekend.

That’s why Mayor Brad Stephens says they’re being “proactive, not reactive” in deploying three magnetometers for patrons to walk through before they enter the park. The security checkpoints will be near Fogo de Chão on the south, Saltwater Coastal Grill on the north, and the parking garage on the east.

The village board purchased the Evolv Express Gen2 single-lane magnetometers for $100,172 from DSI Security Services last week.

Concerts are from 7 to 10 p.m., and postshow musical fireworks displays are on all nights except July 31 and Aug. 28.

While outside food and coolers are prohibited, refreshments are available for purchase at nearby tents. Parking can be validated from any of the park’s venues.
