Six hospitalized after ambulance crash in Libertyville
Six people, including three paramedics, were hospitalized Sunday morning after a Lake Villa Fire Protection District ambulance collided with two SUVs while transporting a patient on Route 45 in Libertyville.
Fire district Ambulance #243 was transporting a patient at about 11 a.m. when it was involved in the crash at Route 45 and Peterson Road, officials said. The ambulance had its emergency lights and sirens activated at the time, according to police.
“As the ambulance entered the intersection it was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Peterson Road,” Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said.
The ambulance then crashed into the median and hit a second vehicle in the turn lane on Route 45, he added.
Three Lake Villa medics in the ambulance, the patient being transported and both SUV drivers were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with minor injuries, authorities said.
A ladder truck with the Grayslake Fire Protection District assisted at the scene, while the Mundelein Fire Department assisted the Libertyville Fire Department during the incident.
The crash remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department.
