Girls track and field: Prospect runs away with sixth straight MSL championship
The Prospect girls track and field team officially became a dynasty when they captured their 14th Mid-Suburban League championship Wednesday night at Hoffman Estates to break a 13-13 tie with Wheeling for the most titles in MSL history.
The Knights captured their sixth straight MSL crown with 167.5 points to overtake rival Barrington with 142 points. Hersey easily locked up third place with 87.5 points.
Prospect's 4x100 team of Nikki Niebrugge, Samantha Skowronski, Elyse Freeman, and Charlotte Conner took first place in 48.22 seconds. Niebrugge won the 100-meter dash (12.36 seconds), and the 200 (24.90 seconds). Conner won the 300 hurdles (45.27 seconds) while teammate Eva Lapys (5-feet, 2 inches) won the high jump.
The Knights' 4x200 team of Niebrugge, Skowronski, Freeman, and Frances O'Grady won in 1:43.32. O'Grady, Dajana Skolimowska, Olivia Garcia, and Allison Kalkwarf won the 4x400 in 4:05.54.
"(Barrington coach) Deb Revolta is a heck of a coach, and she and her entire staff always have their kids ready," said Prospect coach Pete Wintermute. "You've got to show up and compete, and there is nothing more fun than competing out here against the best teams and the best athletes in the state."
Two-time Barrington state champion Mia Sirois rolled to first place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:15.69, and the 1,600 in 4:53.12. The Fillies' 4x800 team of Sirois, Ashleigh Forbes, Rikki Chatterjee, and Victoria Tarara took first place in 9:29.83.
Barrington's Madison Miles won the 800 in 2:16.83 while freshman teammate Mia Wiatr (5.60 meters) won the long jump.
"We had a great meet, and our 4x800 did what they were supposed to do since they were seeded first so they did their job," said Revolta. "Mia (Sirois) is doing great, she'll do whatever you need her to do, and you can always count on her."
University of Michigan-bound Conant three-time state champion Daisha Brunson showed great form in winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.08 seconds. Brunson is trying to become the first 4-time state champ in the 100 hurdles in IHSA history.
"Daisha works very hard, she cares about what she does, and she's had a sharp mind going through it all," said Conant coach Aaron Essex. "The key for her is to stay mentally sharp, stay focused and confident in herself, and just trust in her training and the process."
Rolling Meadows junior Patrycja Lewicki (3.40 meters) was the pole vault champion while teammate Hazel Nadal won the 400 in 57.91 seconds.
Fremd's Vanessa Tasheva (11.03 meters) won the shot put while Hersey's Sadie Marks (37.0 meters) won the discus. Wheeling's Sierra Kuhlman (10.70 meters) won the triple jump.
"She (Marks) has been to state two times, and it was a PR for her tonight," said Hersey assistant coach Mikayla Olsen. "Our 4x100 did well taking second place, and our distance did pretty well tonight taking third in the 4x800."
