Around 15 volunteers picked up a small amount of trash — mostly windblown plastic bags — and raked a wildflower garden before distributing seeds that soon will bloom into flowers displaying brilliant colors.

Karrie Miletic, superintendent of community outreach and events, said the Hoffman Estates Park District always tries to schedule a cleanup event around Earth Day.

“We chose this one because it’s one of our newly renovated parks,” Miletic said. “It will eventually be (one with) arboretum status, similar to Morton Arboretum, but on a smaller scale.”
