Avoid the tiger’s back
President Trump is now in a very similar situation to what was faced by LBJ in the spring of 1965: should American ground troops be sent in?
LBJ was warned by George Ball that if he did he’d be getting on the tiger’s back where it would be very hard to get off. Doing this in Iran would ruin Trump’s presidency just as LBJ’s decision did then. It set in motion a cycle of escalating actions by both sides.
Let’s hope he doesn’t do it. The temptation to put our troops in a position to invade might be too much.
