Elgin Del Webb Community announces yearlong celebration for America’s 250th Anniversary
The Elgin Del Webb community is celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary in true Edgewater style. Under the direction of resident committee chair Bonnie Moore and lifestyle director Natalie Brennan, the community has planned a robust schedule of monthly activities to bring neighbors together and honor the nation’s semiquincentennial.
To commemorate this historic milestone, Edgewater will host a wide array of engaging educational and social events throughout the year:
• May: Neighbors will gather for popcorn and a special community screening of the film “The Patriot.”
• Memorial Day: Residents will celebrate the holiday with a community potluck patio party.
• July: Festivities will include a parade, a picnic, and a live reading of The Declaration of Independence by a talented group of Edgewater voices. Prolific local author Bill Kolasinski will lead an American history presentation, while the Edgewater Genealogy Group presents “A Nation of Immigrants.”
• August: The month begins with a History Trivial Pursuit at the monthly Fun Friday gathering. Additionally, the Late Bloomers Garden Club will host historical presenter Leslie Goddard for a special program on “Lady Bird Johnson.”
• September: The Labor Day weekend kicks off with “A Taste of America” community potluck.
• November: The community will gather for a special tribute honoring Edgewater veterans.
• January and beyond: The Chapter One Book Club has selected Marla Miller’s “Betsy Ross and the Making of America” as its January read. Historical presenter Leslie Goddard will also make a return appearance, hosted by The Creekside Cookers, to present the “10 Most Influential Cookbooks in America.”
• Ongoing: The large scrolling TV screen located in the Lodge will feature continuous, rotating information highlighting facts and history about the various American states.
