Aurora teen faces gun charges

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after a chase in Aurora, where police recovered a loaded handgun.

Police say around 6:36 p.m. Sunday, investigators with the Special Operations Group observed the boy riding an electric scooter illegally in the road near Front and Jefferson streets. They tried to stop him and chased him through the neighborhood and parking lots.

When they searched him after arrest, police say they found a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic handgun in a cross-body bag the teen was wearing.

Police say the boy is affiliated with a gang.

The boy is charged with three felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer. A Kane County judge has ordered the teen to be detained at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.
