Residents evacuated, units damaged in Grayslake apartment fire

Grayslake authorities are investigating what caused a fire in a three-story apartment complex late Friday that displaced about 10 residents.

No one was injured in the blaze that occurred in the 1900 block of Country Drive, Grayslake Fire Protection District officials said.

Firefighters responding to a call around 10:30 p.m. arrived to find smoke and flames erupting from the third floor. Seven other fire departments joined Grayslake to assist at the scene.

Apartment dwellers were evacuated from 24 units and the fire was under control by 11:15 p.m.

Six units were so damaged, authorities deemed them uninhabitable. The residents were able to find housing elsewhere.

No damage estimates were available as of Saturday morning.

Fire departments from Gurnee, Round Lake, Countryside, Libertyville, Mundelein, Fox Lake and Lake Villa helped extinguish the blaze.

Wauconda, Lake Zurich, Antioch, Beach Park, and Newport fire departments covered operations for Grayslake, and went on two rescue calls.
