Trade School Scholarship for D214 students accepting applicants

Registration for the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation Scholarships for the Trades is officially open. The Foundation is offering several $2,500 scholarships for D214 students or alumni who are planning to attend trade school. This is the fourth year the scholarship will be awarded.

The scholarships are open to D214 students and alumni ages 17-25 who are interested in pursuing a hands-on career in construction, manufacturing, transportation, or service trades (such as automotive maintenance, aviation maintenance, carpentry, cosmetology, electricity, HVAC, machining, pipe fitting, plumbing, public safety, welding, etc.) that require advanced training other than a four-year degree.

“We are thrilled to once again help local students pursue a career in the trades,” said Lauree Harp, founder, and chair of the foundation. “We’ve seen so many talented makers pass through the library’s Makerplace; and we want to give them an opportunity to turn their passion into a career.”

In addition to the foundation scholarships, the organization will also be awarding two additional named scholarships, one funded by the family of the late Arlington Heights resident and maker Jeffrey Moroney and one funded by the Hartnett family.

“With the rising cost of a four-year degree and increasing wages for trade workers, more and more people are looking to the trades as a way to cut down on student debt and make a respectable living,” said Annie McCarte, Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation Director. “And with AI starting to replace office jobs, a career in the trades has become even more appealing.”

D214 students and graduates who are looking for financial assistance with trade school tuition can apply for the Foundation’s Scholarship for the Trades before April 30. Candidates must complete the Foundation Scholarship application, which includes providing a letter of recommendation and completing two short-answer questions on the candidate’s trade interest and how the scholarship will help the candidate achieve their career goals.
