Why not go electric?

The article from Ben Szalinski about the aging patrol cars fleet of the State Polices sparks the following questions:

1. Illinois has pushed for EVs, so why not replace the cars with new EVs?

2. Rivian makes EVs in Illinois, so it seems that we could leverage a real deal with them to build cars, bolster employment and keep most of the expended funds here in Illinois.

3. Since we export one-fifth of the electrical power we generate in this state, can we reduce the cost of operating the fleet with electrical power rather than using petroleum which we bring in from others?
