Police: Des Plaines woman loses nearly $2,000 in banking scam
A Des Plaines woman reportedly fell victim to a scammer posing as a bank worker, police said Wednesday.
The 61-year-old woman told police that earlier that day she had been called by someone claiming to be with Chase Bank’s fraud department regarding two unauthorized withdrawals.
The caller instructed the woman to access her U.S. Bank account and enter a code to reverse the transactions, police said. She later learned nearly $2,000 had been transferred out of her account.
Des Plaines police have warned people to be suspicious of callers claiming to be from a company, government agency or law enforcement organization. People should hang up and call reliable numbers to verify the caller actually works there, police have said.
