Independence Academy offers behind-the-scenes look at how Lake County government works

Lake County residents are invited to a behind-the-scenes look at how government works through the America 250 Independence Academy.

Believed to be a first for Lake County government, the seven-week civic education program was launched last week to highlight how the principles of the Declaration of Independence continue to shape county services.

About 14 hours of instruction will be provided at government buildings and other locations through presentations, tours and discussions with county leaders and staff.

“It’s going to be pretty inclusive. It’s a great way to to understand a little better about government,” said Tammy Chatman, chief communications officer.

“When you educate and inform people it allows them to understand how government actually works,” she added.

The academy is similar to that of citizens police or fire academies held in various communities, she added.

“It’s an opportunity to see the work of our facilities, technology, systems and people that deliver the essential services we rely on,” said county board Chair Sandy Hart.

Most sessions well be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays beginning April 22. Applications are being accepted through April 15.

Each session will explore a different area of county government with participants touring specific departments to learn how that work connects to the principles expressed by the Founding Fathers.

“Building trust in government starts with helping people understand how decisions are made,” said county board Member Jessica Vealitzek, who championed the program. “I really want to foster more trust in government.”

Participants must be 18 or older, attend all scheduled sessions, provide their own transportation to various locations and be willing to participate in discussions and facility tours.

The academy is limited to 25 participants who will be selected at random from qualified applicants. Those selected will be notified no later than April 16. Additional applicants may be placed on a waitlist and contacted if a seat becomes available.
