Oak Brook Park District’s Gateway Gators advance four squads to Special Olympics state tournament

The Oak Brook Park District is celebrating the remarkable achievements of the Gateway Gators basketball program, part of Gateway Special Recreation Association, as four of its teams advance to the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament on March 14-15.

At the Special Olympics Illinois Region C Basketball Qualifier in February, the Gateway Gators competed at the highest level and delivered an unforgettable performance. Four of the program’s five teams have officially advanced to the state tournament.

Congratulations to the Red, Yellow, White, and Blue teams for bringing home gold and securing their spots at state. Their hard work, teamwork and determination were on full display throughout the competition.

“This group of athletes represents everything we hope for in our Gateway Special Recreation Association Gators program,” said Ryan Massengill, director of recreation with Gateway SRA. “Their dedication, resilience, and support of one another led to an amazing day at the qualifier. Seeing four teams advance to state is something we are all so proud of.”

A tremendous shoutout also goes to the Green team for their incredible effort.

While they narrowly missed advancement, their dedication, heart, and growth throughout the season are achievements worth celebrating.

Coaches and volunteers played a vital role in this milestone moment, guiding athletes all season long with encouragement, leadership, and unwavering support.

This season carries even deeper meaning for the Gators community.

Just two days after a White Vs. Blue game at Oak Brook Park District, the teams experienced the sudden loss of Bryan, a beloved athlete who had been a member of the Blue team for many years and competed with the White team this season. The Gateway Gators dedicate this season in honor of Bryan.

The success of the Gateway Gators reflects the power of inclusive athletics and the impact of strong community partnerships.

Through its collaboration with Gateway Special Recreation Association, the Oak Brook Park District helps ensure residents of all abilities have access to competitive sports, skill development, and meaningful experiences.

As the Red, Yellow, White, and Blue teams prepare to compete at the state tournament on March 14-15, the entire Oak Brook community is cheering them on.
