3 charged with three-county highway chase that ended in Aurora

Three men are facing gun charges in DuPage County after a police chase that began with a shooting in Bellwood and ended near the west side of Aurora.

Cameron McClellan, 27, of the 8000 block of South Stewart Avenue, Chicago; Troy Hughes, 23, of the 2200 block of St. Charles Road, Bellwood; and Dante Williams, 23, of the 9700 block of Ellis Avenue, Chicago, were arrested Wednesday night.

A DuPage judge ordered all three be detained pretrial.

McClellan is charged with one count of armed violence and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Hughes and Williams are both charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

The Kane County state’s attorney has charged Hughes with home invasion and trespass to residence, both felonies.

Bellwood police were investigating a shooting that took place on 22nd Avenue, where a man was shot in an ankle and kneecap, according to a prosecutor’s petition for pretrial detention.

Dante Williams

They and Hillside police began chasing a green Jeep. An Oak Brook officer joined the chase around 5:50 p.m. on westbound I-88.

Authorities allege McClellan was driving, at speeds reaching 115 mph, on the shoulders and weaving in traffic.

Two guns were thrown out the passenger side of the Jeep. Naperville police officers recovered a stolen Glock 43X pistol and a loaded Ruger .223 rifle.

The Jeep exited at Orchard Road in Aurora and made its way to the 6S400 block of Shagbark Lane, where it drove into the backyard of a house.

Hughes and Williams ran off while McClellan was found in the Jeep in the 100 block of North Deerpath Road, authorities said.

Hughes was found in the basement of a house on Blackberry Ridge Drive, and Williams was found in a worker’s van on Blackberry Ridge Drive.

The men’s next court date is April 6.
