Q&A
What is your top issue and how do you propose to address it?
There are multiple important issues but the single most important issue is foreign policy because American foreign policy effects most, if not all, components (agriculture, cultural, economic, industrial, religious, etc.) of all Americans and throughout the world as well. As a geographer, I have an understanding of foreign policy to make that policy work for all Americans and Illinoisans.
Do you support the unilateral foreign policy course President Trump has taken with such actions as the bombing of Iran, assaults on Venezuelan ships and the seizure of the Venezuelan president?
Given the intelligence needed, President Trump acted in the best of interests of America and the course of the world. I support those actions that are in the best interest of America.
The executive branch has expanded its powers in recent years on foreign policy, economic tariffs, executive orders and more. Are you satisfied with the direction these activities are moving? If so, why? If not, what needs to be done differently?
First, the statement that the executive branch has expanded its powers is over-reach. It's a matter of utilizing the powers of the executive office. Again, such actions are evaluated and moved forward in the best interests of the United States and I am in support of such. And, for the example of economic tariffs, there is strong indications that the tariffs are working. It would be advisable to allow more time so as the tariffs can accomplish its intended objectives.
What should U.S. border policy be? If elected, what would you do to make it happen?
Illegal entry is unlawful. A nation is defined, in part, by its borders. No nation in the world tolerates an open border policy such as we have in the United States. The border needs to be shut and secured. President Trump was elected largely on this position because the majority of Americans agree with it. Those who want to become American citizens should follow the legal path accordingly so our government approves and accounts for such citizenship. I would work to make that path more responsible but available.
What should be the government’s role in assuring health care for Americans? What should be done regarding the ACA to better perform this function?
Healthcare is a major concern for all Americans. The government has an increased role in making healthcare available and affordable. No doubt, the ACA has failed in many respects and there is room for improvement. Last month, the President announced the 'Great Healthcare Plan' and this upgraded master plan should be given the chance to succeed as it will benefit all Americans. Provisions for mental health is also a key part of this growing problem.
What is your vision for a solution to conflicts involving Israel and the Palestinians? What should the United States be doing to advance this position?
This is a problem that has existed for many years with no obvious way to settle the dispute. Both sides of this argument are prejudiced and make unequitable demands. Any settlement must be contingent to factors that have positive effects for both sides. We must not forget that Israel is America's strongest ally in the Middle-East and should be regarded as an ally in this matter. Again, we need to act in the best interests of the United States and this can be accomplished with the attentiveness for both the Israeli and Palestinian people. In my opinion, this is possible with negotiations and not violence. A starter is for the Palestinian people to elect a responsible government to represent its people honestly and effectively.
