Bulls announce Ivey will rest sore knee; Collins done for year
The Bulls announced two injury updates on Saturday morning. Forward Zach Collins will undergo surgery for a right toe strain and miss the remainder of the season; while guard Jaden Ivey will be sidelined due to right knee soreness and be reevaluated in two weeks.
The 6-foot-9 Collins could have made a significant impact this season, since the Bulls are low on big men. But he'll end up playing in just 10 games. Collins, 28, broke a bone in his hand in the last preseason game, returned from that injury on Dec. 5, then suffered the sprained toe. He'll be a free agent this summer.
Ivey averaged 28.8 minutes in four games after arriving in a trade from Detroit. Then with Josh Giddey and Tre Jones back from hamstring injuries on Thursday against Toronto, Ivey didn't play at all. Interim coach Wes Unseld Jr. called it a basketball decision.
After the game, Ivey mentioned his knee was bothering him, but declared himself ready to play. Early last season, Ivey suffered a broken left leg, then before this season began, he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Ivey, 24, will be a restricted free agent this summer.
Meanwhile, the Bulls get two chances to snap a seven-game losing streak this weekend by hosting Detroit on Saturday and the Knicks on Sunday.
