Krishnamoorthi among nation’s top U.S. Senate fundraisers

With less than a month until Illinois’ primary Election Day, U.S. Senate candidate Raja Krishnamoorthi of Schaumburg continues to have one of the best-funded campaigns in the nation, federal records show.

Krishnamoorthi, now a congressman for the suburban 8th District, ended 2025 having raised nearly $28.5 million for his Senate bid, according to the Federal Election Commission.

That places him third among all U.S. Senate candidates this cycle so far, behind only Democratic U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff of Georgia — the leader with $63.9 million raised — and Cory Booker of New Jersey, whose campaign reported taking in about $30.1 million.

Krishnamoorthi is near the top when it comes to campaign spending, too. His $13.2 million total at the year’s end placed him fifth among all Senate candidates.

Ossoff tops the spending list with $42.7 million, followed by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina ($18.7 million), former Democratic candidate Josh Weil of Florida ($15.9 million) and Booker ($14 million).

In addition to Krishnamoorthi, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton of Chicago and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly of Lynwood are among the 10 Democratic candidates running for the Senate seat being vacated by Dick Durbin. Six Republicans also are running.

Illinois’ primary Election Day is March 17.

In the House

A candidate in the largely suburban 9th Congressional District is near the top of the list of top U.S. House fundraisers, too.

Kat Abughazaleh, a Chicago Democrat, ranks 69th with $2.7 million raised as of Dec. 31, FEC records show.

The $1.9 million Team Abughazaleh spent as of the year’s end ranks 36th among all U.S. House candidates this cycle so far.

Fourteen candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination in the 9th. No others placed in the Top 100 nationally for fundraising or spending.

Stretching from Chicago’s North Side to the Crystal Lake area, the 9th District includes parts of Cook, Lake and McHenry counties. Incumbent Democrat Jan Schakowsky of Evanston isn’t seeking reelection.

Other Democratic candidates include Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss; state Sens. Laura Fine of Glenview and Michael Simmons of Chicago; and Wilmette resident Phil Andrew.

Four Republicans are running, too.
