American Wind Band takes you on a journey with ‘Music Across the Globe’

The American Wind Band presents “Music Across the Globe” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road in Elmhurst. It is free but donations will be accepted in support of the band.

The band directors have chosen a lot of new and interesting music to take you on a trip to the other side of the globe for these last weeks of winter. Music to be performed: “Dublin Holiday Overture” by Forrest Buchtel, “Arabesque” by Samuel Hazo, “Musik-Musik (Czech March)” by Frantisek Kmoch, “Valdres (Norwegian March)” by Johannes Hanssen, “Song of India” by N. Rimsky-Korsakov, and “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance.

American Wind Band is a nonprofit 501(c)3 adult community band based in Downers Grove, created to promote and encourage the appreciation of concert band literature through performance.

This group of dedicated volunteer musicians knows the power of music to inspire and move the soul and presents concerts at various venues, extending the enjoyment of band music to all.

New members are always welcome at band rehearsals (no audition required) on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, 1032 Maple Ave.

The American Wind Band also endeavors to inspire talented young musicians by sponsoring a scholarship competition for eighth grade and high school band musicians. The scholarships are provided to encourage private music study or attendance at a band camp of the student’s choosing.

This year’s scholarship winners will be featured at our April 26, concert also at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church.
