Boys basketball roundup: MSL West sweeps five games from East on crossover night
It was MSL crossover night Tuesday as East and West teams met to end regular season play, and the revamped West division won all five games.
On Wednesday, West division winner Fremd will host East division winner Hoffman Estates at 7 p.m. in the MSL title game.
Palatine 60, Schaumburg 50: In a battle of former West division rivals, Palatine (26-4), which finished second in the West this season, scooted past the Saxons. Tony Balanganyi led Palatine with 17 points, Robbie Wilcox had 11 and Jake Tripp added 8. Schaumburg (18-11) was led by Cam Anderson’s 16 points while Tony Horon Jr. added 10 points, Masyn Harrell 9 points and Ray Black 8 points.
Hersey 52, Buffalo Grove 45: Hersey (18-7) held off the Bison as Logan Luxem had 14 points, Jake Nawrot 13 points and Tristan Trotter 9 points. Buffalo Grove (11-18) picked up 22 points from Alex Sirbu and 7 points from Dylan Ronczkowski.
Rolling Meadows 65, Wheeling 38: Leading 10-8 late in the first quarter, Meadows (17-12) went on a 21-4 run to pull away. Tyler Stankiewicz had a huge night with 25 points. Marty Lesner added 12 points while Kenan Pekovic had 10 points. Wheeling (6-24) was led by Jesus 'Chuy' Zavala’s 12 points and Luke Papaioannou’s 8 points.
Barrington 73, Elk Grove 49: Oliver Gray had 20 points, Jackson Roberts 19 points and Luke Loughlin 10 points as Barrington (11-14) rolled with 9 different players scoring. Elk Grove (10-20) was led by Khaleel Khan, who had 14 points, Copper Casterton, who finished with 12 points, and Nolan Brand, who had 9 points.
Prospect 55, Conant 48: Prospect pulled away from a 25-25 tie game at the half to pick up the win. Will Stratigos led Prospect (13-16) with 15 points while Colin Tucker added 11 points and Danny Simon 8 points. Conant (9-20) was paced by Jakub Glowacki who had 16 points, Bryce Harris with 11, Devin Heyse, who had 9 points, and Tyler Marchese, who chipped in 8 points.
Wauconda 94, North Chicago 76: Wauconda (24-7, 13-1) put an exclamation point on the Northern Lake County Conference title. The Bulldogs had 5 players in double figures and 9 different players scored. Leo Brinias led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Austin Carlsen had 18 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Alex Ortega finished with 17 points, Tony Salemi 16 points and Cole Plucinski 13 points.
Grayslake Central 59, Lakes 46: Grayslake Central pulled away from a 28-28 halftime tie to finish second in the NLCC. The Rams (21-9, 11-3) were led by Cole Halverson and Carson Woods, who each had 20 points. Alex Granville chipped in 10 points for the Rams. Ben Newcomb led Lakes (16-12, 9-5) with 14 points while Carter Martin had 10 points.
Grant 72, Grayslake North 60: Grant (14-11, 10-4) picked up the win to finish third in the NLCC. Jayden Smith led Grant with 19 points while Charles Schlicht chipped in 16 and Damarrion Smith 15. Josh Gamboa added 9 points and DJ Stitts 8 points. Grayslake North is 10-19, 3-11.
Antioch 63, Round Lake 40: Chance Parson poured in 23 points and had 6 rebounds while Copper Marabella had 9 points and Mark Render 7 points for Antioch (6-23, 2-12). Round Lake 12-16, 2-12) was led by Jaquan Jamerson, who had 16 points, and Jonny Arteaga, who had 9 points.
Vernon Hills 50, Maine South 40: In an CSL crossover, Vernon Hills (21-9) got 19 points from Brady Larsen and 13 points form Jeremy Zamost to post the victory. Maine South (12-17) was led by Ian Smucker’s 13 points and Panayiotis Sotos’ 11 points.
Glenbrook North 69, Maine East 63: Glenbrook North won round one between the teams in Northbrook. They will meet again next Wednesday in the Class 4A regionals at Maine East.
Glenbrook South 56, Maine West 42: Glenbrook South had too much for Maine West (14-15).
Addison Trail 66, Leyden 61: Leyden dropped its final WSC Gold game to finish second with a 20-9, 8-4 mark.
Northridge Prep 77, Schaumburg Christian 27: Schaumburg Christian 15-13 had a rough trip to Des Plaines and fell in nonconference play.
