Black history honored at Waukegan history museum
The Waukegan Historical Society with the Waukegan Park District is honoring Black History Month with a special monthlong exhibition and guest lecture at the Waukegan History museum at the Carnegie, 1 N. Sheridan Road.
The special exhibit titled “The Tarver Family: Black Pioneers of Waukegan” tells the story of the early pioneers whose roots trace to enslavement in Tennessee.
Gregory Gordon, professor of history at the College of Lake County, will give a presentation highlighting Trinity A.M.C. Church and its role as an anchor for African Americans in the community at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 as part of the Museum After Dark series.
The lecture is free but registration is required. Visit waukeganhistorical.org/events.
