Basketball roundup: Warren boys clinch first conference title in 14 years; Grant surprises Grayslake Central at buzzer

Warren ended their 14-year title drought with a fast start Tuesday in Gurnee.

The Blue Devils, who have not won the North Suburban title since the 2011-2012 season, opened with a 12-3 spurt and then raced to the conference championship 75-59 over Lake Zurich.

Jaxon Davis led Warren (25-2, 12-0) with 30 points while Braylon Walker had 13 points and Javin Griffin and Joel Paasch each had 7.

Lake Zurich (12-14, 5-7) was led by Kain Kretschmar’s 17 points, Adrian Riep’s 13 points and Brian Bennett’s 8 points.

Stevenson 69, Zion-Benton 46: The Patriots (18-8, 7-4) got a huge game from Rocco Pagliocca who poured in 27 points. Donovan Williams had 18 points while Aidan Albrecht added 8 points.

Wauconda 69, Round Lake 61: Wauconda (21-7, 11-1) held off an inspired Round Lake team to move into sole possession of first place in the Northern Lake County. Alex Ortega led Wauconda with 28 points, Leo Brinias had 19 points and Cole Plucinski added 15 points. Round Lake (12-14, 2-10) was led by Jaquan Jamerson’s 14 points and Ryder Haynes 8 points.

Grant 49, Grayslake Central 47: DJ Stitts’ driving basket at the buzzer lifted Grant to the victory. Grant rallied from 9 down after three quarters to stun Grayslake Central and knock the Rams (20-8, 10-2) out of a tie for first in the Northern Lake County.

Stitts led Grant (13-10, 9-3) with 14 points while Jayden Smith had 11 and Damarrion Smith 10. Alex Granville led Grayslake Central with 15 points while Cole Halverson chipped in 13.

Lakes 50, Antioch 48: Lakes (15-10, 8-4) swept the season series from district rival Antioch (5-22, 1-11). Jaylen Pinkard Led Lakes with a career-high 17 points while Carter Martin added 14. Antioch was paced by Chance Parsons’ 19 points and Mark Render 10 points.

Fremd 77, Niles North 72 (OT): Fremd (23-2) prevailed in overtime as Niles North (20-8) sent the game into extra time with a three-pointer with three seconds to play. Tommy Moffett had a career-high 32 points for Fremd.

Rolling Meadows 51, Glenbrook South 43: With the game tied at 38-38 with under four minutes to play, Marty Lesner’s basket put the Mustangs up for good. Meadows closed out the game with a 13-5 run. Tyler Stankiewicz led Meadows with 21 points, Lesner had 11 points and 9 rebounds while Andrew Krestel had 8 points and Kenan Pekovic 6 points.

Maine East 82, Elk Grove 53: Maine East (19-8) came out and shot well to put away the Grenadiers (10-18). Nolan Brand led Elk Grove with 20 points, Khaleel Khan had 16 points and Cooper Casterton added 11.

Carmel 35, Lake Forest Academy 31: The Corsairs (10-18) picked up the win as Ethan Matz scored 14, Preston Dahm 8 and Jameer Miles 7.

Timothy Christian 60, St. Viator 39: Playing without an injured Jacob Only, Viator (19-9) came up short at home. Dawson Charles led the Lions with 20 points while Isaiah McKenny had 12 points.

Waukegan 76, Mundelein 42: Waukegan (20-7, 9-3) took care of Mundelein (6-23, 2-10).

Lake Forest 53, Libertyville 39: Libertyville (14-10, 7-4) came up short in Lake Forest.

Glenbrook North 57, Prospect 33: Glenbrook North just had too much for Prospect (11-16).

North Chicago 56, Grayslake North 41: Grayslake North (9-18, 2-9) fell in North Chicago.

Fremd 50, Schaumburg 14: Greta Thompson eclipsed the 1,000-point mark as the Vikings (23-6) rolled over Schaumburg (14-15).

Rolling Meadows 63, Hoffman Estates 24: Meadows (17-10) had a huge night from Abby Ramel who scored 27 points. Iris Jordan had 9 points and Anna Andiano 8 points as 11 different Mustangs hit the scorebook. Hoffman fell to 12-16.

Barrington 63, Elk Grove 30: Maddie Anderle led the way for the Fillies (11-17) with 10 points. Jamie Wirtz led Elk Grove (7-21) with 11 points.

Glenbrook South 63, Maine West 34: Yousuf Abramson scored 11 points to lead Maine West (14-13). Chloe Mach added six points for the Warriors.
