Geneva High School play takes a humorous look at U.S. history
Students at Geneva High School are taking a fresh approach to a famously familiar subject: American history. While history class may be boring to some, the GHS Theatre Department is giving the topic new life with its upcoming production of “The Complete History of America (Abridged)” — a fast paced comedy written by Adam Long, Austin Tichenor, and Reed Martin.
Performances are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14, at Geneva High School’s auditorium, 416 McKinley Ave. Tickets are available at ticketpeak.com/go/genevahighschool304/events. Adult tickets are $10, and student and senior tickets are $7.
The Geneva actors will playfully condense centuries of U.S. events, starting with the revolution in 1775, and race through to the present in a fraction of the time it took the founding fathers. With its quick humor, modern references, and playful storytelling, the production aims for an “education” of both history buffs and casual audience members.
Freshman Emerson Carter says the audience will be surprised at how relatable and funny the show is.
“I think audiences wouldn’t expect how up to date the references are despite the ancient dates,” Emerson said.
Junior Ellie Harvey agrees, commenting on the challenge of balancing historical accuracy with playful character work.
“The fact that we’re playing ourselves while still accurately depicting history is difficult to balance,” she says.
Both performers agree that the cast’s hard work has paid off — describing the show as “the SparkNotes of America’s history.”
No production is perfect without a talented director, and Drew Longo has led the cast in shaping the show’s unique tone. He has been a massive help in helping actors find the line between comedy and historic storytelling.
In addition, technical director Jason Fontanetta and student crew members have had a large impact in bringing this production to life.
The actors, crew members and directors all agree that they are ready to show their hard work as opening night approaches. With humor, energy and a fresh perspective on the past, the Geneva High School Theatre Department is ready to fill the auditorium with laughter.
