Runners blast through snow in Frozen Tundra 5K

Snow-covered trails that usually are quiet on a winter morning came to life Saturday with the passage of 350 runners during the Frozen Tundra IPA 5K in Lincolnshire.

Runners started in front of Half Day Brewing, ran through the woods along the Des Plaines River Trail, which was covered in 6 inches of snow, then doubled back to finish right where they started.

“It’s not plowed so they run in snow, then turn around and come back and drink and have fun,” said event emcee Dani Snare.

Jason Shaw of Kildeer was with a group of friends staying warm inside the restaurant/brewery before the start of the run, and he added rubber snow-grips to the bottom of his sneakers for added traction. He said the event is a unique experience, and he was looking forward to running in the snow.

“I’m here with some friends, so it’s good to get out of the house. And, there’s beer,” Shaw said.
