Basketball roundup: Wauconda boys stay perfect in NLCC; Vernon Hills girls close in on conference crown
Wauconda continued its winning ways.
The Bulldogs (17-5, 8-0) took care of business in Lake Villa Tuesday and won their ninth in a row with a convincing 69-44 win over Lakes. Alex Ortega led Wauconda, which leads the Northern Lake County Conference, with 25 points. Tony Salemi had 20 points while Austin Carlsen chipped in 15 points.
Lakes (11-9, 5-3) was led by Carter Martin, who scored 12 points.
North Chicago 48, Antioch 37: Antioch battled hard in Northern Lake County action. The Sequoits (5-17, 1-7) were led by Logan Lennon, who scored 14 points and had 7 rebounds while Chance Parsons added 10 points.
Grant 69, Round Lake 54: Grant (9-10, 5-3) picked up the victory behind Charles Schlicht’s 20 points and 4 rebounds. DJ Stitts added 15 points, Damarrion Smith 12 points and 6 assists and Noah McMath 9 points and 5 rebounds.
Round Lake (9-11, 1-7) was led by Jaquan Jamerson, who had 19 points, Ryder Haynes had 12 points and Devin Powell 7 points.
Libertyville 36, Lake Zurich 32: Points were difficult to come by for both teams as Libertyville (11-7, 5-2) held off the Bears (8-13, 2-6). Jack Cenar led the Wildcats with 11 points while Bryce Wegrzyn had 9 points. Kain Kretschmar led Lake Zurich with 13 points while Evan Peterson had 8 points.
Stevenson 65, Mundelein 34: Stevenson (16-6, 5-2) stayed close in the North Suburban race behind Rocco Pagliocca, who had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Donny Williams added 15 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks while Aidan Albrecht had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Mundelein (6-18, 2-6) was led by Johnny Weiss, who had 11 points.
Conant 51, Fenton 39: The Cougars (7-16) picked up the win as 9 different players scored. Devin Heyse led the way for the Cougars with 9 points while Niki Mirchev had 8 points.
Glenbrook South 40, Prospect 34: Prospect (9-13) had a rough night shooting in the second half and came up short. Colin Tucker led the Knights with 9 points.
Hersey 54, Carmel 50 (OT): Ethan Matz sent the game to overtime for Carmel (8-15). But Hersey (16-4) had too much left in the tank and picked up the win. Hersey was led by Logan Luxem with 18 points and Charlie Pomis with 16.
Neuqua Valley 70, Barrington 59: Oliver Gray scored 20 points and Darsh Poovana netted 10 points, but it was not quite enough for Barrington (7-12).
Hoffman Estates 80, Streamwood 28: The Hawks (21-3) rolled behind Tory Baskin’s 22 points and 8 steals, Chris Mobley’s 14 points, Bryce Smith’s 11 points and 6 rebounds and Ramon Rosario’s 7 points and 4 rebounds.
Vernon Hills 61, Buffalo Grove 51: Vernon Hills (16-7) knocked off its neighbor to the South as Jeremy Zamost netted 18 points. Daniel Odhiambo added 17 points while Brady Larsen added 12 points. Alex Sirbu, who broke the 1,000-point mark last Saturday, led the Bison Tuesday with 18 points and Alex Karnauchovas added 12 points.
Maine East 53, Maine South 46: Maine East (15-6) won the battle of Park Ridge thanks to Brandon Schreiber and Jayden Dozie who led the Blue Demons with each scoring 16 points. Albert Cooper added 12 points. Maine South dropped to 11-11.
Leyden 80, Elmwood Park 64: Leyden (16-6) won its fifth in a row and ninth in its last 10 games.
Schaumburg Christian 60, South Beloit 59: Schaumburg Christian (13-8, 5-1) rallied form 10 down in the third quarter to post the win on a basket by Landen Reed.

Vernon Hills 68, Highland Park 48: Vernon Hills (18-5, 8-0) took a huge step to closing out the CSL North with its win over Highland Park (12-9, 5-3). Keira Thomas led the Cougars with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Eve Engler added 15 points and 7 assists, Emma Jocson 14 points and Madison Mays 12 points and 6 rebounds.
St. Viator 55, St. Francis 29: The Lions (15-10) had an easy time with the Spartans (9-14) as Bella Gounaris poured in 22 points with two rebounds and three assists. Evelyn Hill added 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals while Ava Garcia added 10 points and 4 rebounds.
Buffalo Grove 59, New Trier 48: The Bison (16-7) traveled to Winnetka and won for the eighth time in their last 9 games with their win over the Trevians (10-15). Kayla Daugird led the Bison with 11 points. Hannah Weber had 10 points, and Amanda Kowalski had 9 points.
Resurrection 63, Maine West 50: The Warriors (12-8) came up short in their trip down Talcott to the Bandits (17-8). Kaitlyn Nutley led Maine West with 17 points while Yousuf Abramson and Dayliana Rodriguez each had 8 points.
South Beloit 51, Schaumburg Christian 26: Schaumburg Christian (3-8) had a tough time in its trip to South Beloit.
