Barrington reaches agreement with firefighters on salaries, staffing

Barrington has reached agreement with its firefighters union giving firefighters a pay raise and the department a boost in staffing.

The village board approved a contract Monday with Barrington Firefighters Union Local 3481.

The contract runs through the end of the year.

Fire Chief John Christian said the village has agreed to hire three firefighters during the current fiscal year under the new agreement. It comes, he said, at an opportune time.

“It's a tremendous help. Our call volume has increased. Since I got here five years ago, it's gone up 39%,” he said.

In 2025, the fire department responded to around 2,600 calls, an increase of 5.5%.

Firefighters will receive a 4% salary increase. The previous increase was 3%.

The starting salary range for the fire department in 2026 is $86,955.44 to $97,068.40, depending on experience.
