Firefighters contain Wheeling apartment building fire early Saturday
Firefighters were able to extinguish a fire in a Wheeling apartment Saturday morning and stop it from spreading to the rest of the building.
Crews were dispatched at 5:37 a.m. to the 1100 block of Pleasant Run Drive, where smoke was showing from the roof of the two-story building, authorities said.
First responders went inside and extended a hose line to extinguish flames in the apartment’s bedroom and hallway by 6:02 a.m., according to a fire department news release.
All residents of the building were able to safely evacuate on their own; firefighters removed a dog from the apartment where the fire started, officials said.
One person was evaluated for possible injuries but signed a release not needing additional care. No other injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
While authorities said the cause of the fire is under investigation, early signs pointed to a lithium-ion device found in the area of origin.
The apartment involved in the fire was deemed uninhabitable. All other residents were able to return to the building.
Fire crews remained on scene throughout the morning to ventilate the building and perform salvage and overhaul.
